Document Summary
Employment is a form of work in which a person, called an employee is dependent on and mostly subservient to an employer. Employees sell their labour in exchange for compensation, usually in the form of wages and perhaps benefits of some sort. The employee contract sets out the specific rules, obligations and rights applicable to the employer and is usually enforceable in a court of law. A business that uses independent contractors or temporary placement workers may avoid unemployment standard laws or the requirement to pay insurance premiums to workers(cid:495) compensation systems. The employment relationship allows employers to maximize worker effectiveness by designing workplace reward systems that recognize and promote loyalty and commitment. Factors that consider whether someone is an employee or an independent contractor. Independent contractors can usually determine the hours they work and the manner in which the work is performed, and can usually hire other people to perform the work.
