Document Summary

Definition: the spread and intensification of capitalism across the globe. Today it involves the interaction and integration of people through international trade and investment, travel and tourism and information technology and the mass media. Caused by people searching for a better life in another country. Mass media has persuaded many people that moving abroad can bring them an easy life. Today, tourism is the world"s largest industry. Many developing countries have turned to tourism in the hope that it will attract foreign exchange and investment. Some people view it as an extension of colonialism. This means downsizing or closing facilities in canada or the us and relocating to countries where labour costs and taxes are low. With few transferable skills, many new immigrants, especially women find work as domestics or alongside national workers in soft sectors such as the garment industry. Women are often forced to accept lower wages, increased workloads and higher stress.
