Document Summary

Research method/design: one of the 7 procedures sociologists use to collect data: surveys, participant observation, qualitative interviews, secondary analysis, documents, unobtrusive measures, and experiments. Survey: the collection of data by having people answer a series of questions. Sample: the individual intended to represent the population to be studied. To be able to generalize findings, a representative sample must be selected. Random sample: a sample in which everyone in the target population has the same chance of being included in the study. After determining a population and sample, make certain the questions are not biased to one point of view or another. Questions must allow respondents (people who respond to the survey) to select the appropriate responses to standardized questions. Questionnaires: the list of questions to be asked. Self-administrated questionnaires: questionnaires filled out be respondents allow a large number of people sampled at a relatively low costs.
