Document Summary

There is no single clear standard for the family. Historically, the state has determined what a family is, who is entitled to family benefits, etc. Census family: married, common law, or lone parent. Common-law couples, lone-parent families, and married couples without children are on the rise. 34. 6% of all census families were married couples with children aged 24 and under. Compare with the 1986 census, where traditional families represented. Traditional family: two opposite-sex parents and their children with a father who works and a mother who stays home and takes care of the home and children. Only 1 in 10 families in canada are traditional. This model is now anachronistic , as there are many family types: Gay couples with kids, single parents, common-law relationships, etc. The nature of those families is shifting. There has been a sharp increase in non-traditional family arrangements, and canadian families are undergoing dramatic transformations.
