Document Summary

People should be valued equally and seek explanations for unequal treatment and inequalities of wealth and power within canadian and other societies. Criticize functionalist & conflict theories for not taking into consideration the lack of power & resources experienced by women and other minorities. Gender and race are socially constructed and form the bases for limitations to equality of condition and opportunity. Consider how people come to be exploited and dominated by others, and the characteristics of those exploited as opposed to those who dominate. Feminists link women"s inequality with their role in social reproduction (childbirth, family labour, household duties/responsibilities, childcare, etc. ) Gender and race are socially constructed and are important factors for limiting equality of condition and opportunity for minority groups. Anti-racist theorists attempt to explain how race and ethnicity affect life chances, opportunities, and social class position. Underlying the maintenance of the system of social inequality is control of a society"s institutions.
