Common sense vs. sociology: according to common sense, our racial classification represents biological differences between people, sociologists stress what we call races are social classification, not biological. Racial superiority: people are inclined to think their own race is superior to others. Ethnic groups: ethnicity- cultural characteristics of an individual, sense of persons belonging focuses on origin, food, dress, family names and relationships, ethnic work- the way people construct their ethnicity. Minority groups and dominant groups: minority groups- people are singled out for unequal treatment, dominant group- people with greater power, privileges and social status. A group becomes a minority in two ways: Expansion of political boundaries which occurs as the result of a decisive military victory. Migration can be voluntary just like how millions of people choose to move to canada. Prejudice and discrimination: discrimination- unfair treatment directed against someone, when the basis of discrimination is race it is known as racism, prejudice- prejudgement usually in a negative way.
