Material culture: jewellery, art, building styles, machines, clothing. Non material culture also referred to as symbolic culture: ways of thinking, beliefs, values, assumptions, symbols of ways people communicate. Saphir-whorf hypothesis: alert us on how extensively we are affected by language it suggests that rather than objects and events forcing themselves into our consciousness, our language determines our consciousness. Values: ideas of what is desirable in life. Positive sanction: expression of approval given for a following a norm. Negative sanction: denotes disapproval for breaking a norm. Money, prize, hug: we expect people to comply with folkways but we are likely to shrug our shoulders and not make a big deal out of it.
