Important of socialization: spitz test (1945-1962: test: compared children who were raised in orphanage vs. children raised in nursing home attached to a women"s prison. In orphanage 6 nurses cared for 45 babies. Role: set of expected behaviors/behavior expected of a person in a particular position in society. Crystallization of self-identity: occurs during adolescence: 1 component of lifelong process of socialization. Symbolic-interactionist foundations of childhood socialization: as child needs are satisfied immediately, initially, don"t distinguish themselves from main caregiver (usually mother) Self: set of ideas/attitudes about who one is as an independent being: occurs by social interaction. Sigmund freud: proposed 1st social-scientific interpretation of process where self emerges.
