Document Summary

Four major approaches to understanding how the general population represents illness: Cat sees itself as a lion, completely delusional. There is no one true, objective things. Everyone is different and we all have a right to various truths. Illness perceptions: self-regulatory model of illness behaviour (when faced with a health stimulus ex. diagnosis of cancer, a person will present a cognitive and emotional response to the diagnosis. That person will then cope with this depending how their perception of the diagnosis and how they decide to deal with it. Criticism: treats people as cognitive machines (but everyone does rationalize things the same, or think the same), this approach assumes we are all the same. Identity: the signs, symptoms and the illness label. Consequence: the perceived physical, social and economic consequences of the disease and the felt emotional consequences. Causes: the perceived causes of the disease. Timeline: the perceived time frame for the development and duration of the illness threat.
