Neighbourhoods are one example of relationships b/w ecological contexts and the lives of individuals and families. Neighbourhoods w problems are stressful and contribute to problems in adaptation for individuals. Neighbourhood risk stronger predictor of grades than parent education, income, etc. In lower risk neighbourhoods w better conditions, teens whose parents were less restrictive had higher grades. In high risk neighbourhoods, teens whose parents were more restrictive had higher grades. Neighbourhood risk processes: correlated w problematic outcomes like personal distress, mental disorders, behaviour problems etc. Neighbourhood protective processes: strengths or resources associated w psoitive individual outcomes, may offset/buffer impact of risk processes. Distal processes: broader in scope, indirectly affect individuals, one distal social process is residential turnover. Proximal processes: affect individuals more directly and immediately.
