Formal personality tests used for variety of tasks incl research, personnel selection, and diagnosis. Longest history in modern personality assessment and generally rooted in psychoanalytic principles. Person presented w ambiguous stimulus will project onto that stimulus their own unconscious motives, needs, drives, feelings, defences, and personality characteristics. Helps reveal info the person cannot/will not report directly. Used to help clinicians form hypotheses about an individual"s personality. Use of these tests remains controversial but they are still frequently adopted by clinicians. Rorschach inkblot test which was compromised and now possibly invalid. Hermann rorschach (1884-1922) noticed people saw different things in the same inkblot and believed their percepts reflected their personality. Each inkblot is presented on a separate card and is handed to respondent in a particular sequence.
