Prognosis: highest mortality rate of all the psychiatric disorders (5-8%, most common causes of death: [starvation, nutritional complications], suicide, more people recover with treatment than without treatment. Anorexia nervosa: about half of patients are restricting type and the other half are binge-eating/purging type, irrational beliefs and attitudes about food are common. Include self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse, or abuse of enemas or diuretics. Dsm criteria: refusal to maintain minimal expected weight. Those with a bmi higher than 17 may also be considered to have a signi cantly low weight: in order to meet diagnostic criteria, an individual must have a distortion in the experience and signi cance of body weight. Binge eating occurs as a result of a shift in attention: purging type. Compensating behaviours (self-induced vomiting, laxatives, etc) to prevent weight gain: non-purging type. Compensating behaviours (exercising, fasting) to prevent weight gain.
