Number of years of schooling is best predictor of occupational success. Development of occupational plans involves: examination of traits, abilities and interests, period of experimentation w different work roles, integration of influences from one"s past w hopes for future. Similar to identity development and is profoundly influenced by social environment in which it takes place. Work values: the sort of rewards individuals seek from their jobs (making lots of money, lots of vacation time etc) 7 basic types of work rewards: extrinsic: high income, security, intrinsic rewards, influence, altruistic rewards, social rewards, leisure. Individuals choose jobs based on relative importance of these various work rewards to them. Individuals become disillusioned and more focused on what they want from a job, abandoning idea that one can have it all. Degrees to which they value extrinsic, altruistic, and social rewards of job decline drastically whereas intrinsic rewards and job security remain strong. Interest and abilities continue to develop during adult year.
