Leisure activities that are both structured and voluntary ex sports, arts, clubs, provide special psychological benefits. Experience sampling methods esm: adolesents carry electronic devices and, when signaled, report on whom they"re with, what they"re doing, and how they"re feeling. Adolesents moods most positive when they"re with friends and least positive when they"re alone. Adolescent moods with family follow curvilinear pattern and become more negative b/w elementary and middle school (grd 5-7), and then rise between grades 8-9. Flow experience: activity that produces high levels of concentration and interest, cimmonly observed in sports or arts enrichment. About 2/3 of high school kids participate in 1 or more extra curriciular activities (most popular is athletics, others are music, those related to academic/occupational interests ex science/language clubs) Participation more prevalent among adolescents from affluent families, who earn better grades, from smaller more rural communities etc. Extracurricular participation is stable over time and improves students" performance in school and reduces likelihood of dropping out.
