Document Summary

Students achieve and are engaged more in school environments that are responsive and demanding. Positive relationships b/w students and teachers enhancing wellbeing and achievement in part by strengthening engagement. Both students and teachers more satisfied in classes that combine moderate structure with high student involvement and teacher support; teachers encourage participation but don"t let class get out of control. Classes that are too task oriented and emphasize teacher control makes students anxious and uninterested. Students do well when teachers spend most time on lessons, begin and end on time, provide clear feedback, and give ample praise. Do better when classroom promotes cooperation vs competition. Teachers" expectations are often accurate reflections of students" ability and create self fulfilling prophecies that ultimately influence how their students behave. Expectations lower performance of students whose teachers perceive them as less capable than they actually are.
