Sibling rivalry can be minimized if firstborn has secure relationships with both parents before the baby arrives and continues to enjoy close ties afterwards. Siblings more likely to get along if their parents get along, especially if older sibling has a shaky insecure relationship with either or both parents and if parents rely heavily on power assertive discipline. Conlicts provide opportunities for siblings to engage in constructive problem solving to resolve disagreements and competing interests. Younger siblings are particularly sensitive to unequeal treatment. One important contribution older siblings make is to provide caretaking services for younger brothers and sisters. Relatively high in self esteem and achievement motivation. Also, many adoptees have been neglected or abused before their adoptions or have other special needs. Children with secure attachment representations cope better with parental conflict than those with insecure attachment representations. Younger, cognitively immature children display the most visible signs of distress as divorce unfolds.
