Document Summary

Neuroanatomy: the anatomy of the nervous system. For vertebrates, we distinguish the central nervous system from the peripheral nervous system. Central nervous system (cns)= brain + spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns)= connects the brain and spinal cord rest of the body: also consists of: Somatic nervous system: axons conveying messages from the sense organs to the cns, and then from cns muscles. Autonomic nervous system: controls the heart, intestines, and other organs. Has some of its cell bodies within the brain or spinal cord and some in clusters along the sides of the spinal cord. Ventral= towards the stomach: think ventriloquist- (cid:862)sto(cid:373)ach talker(cid:863) In a 4-legged animal: top of the brain=dorsal (same side as the animals back, bottom of the brain= ventral (on the stomach side) Dorsal-ventral axis of the human brain is at a right angle to the dorsal-ventral axis of the spinal cord. Dorsal: towards the back, away from the ventral (stomach) side.
