Document Summary

Chapter 3 the biological bases of behavior. Soma- cell body, contains the cell nucleus and much of the chemical machinery common to most cells. Dendrite- parts of a neuron that are specialized to receive informaion: receive info from many thousands of other cells so they have large dendriic trees. Axon- long thin ibre that transmits signals away from the soma to other neurons or to muscles or glands. Myelin sheath- insulaing material that encases some axons: protects the signal in the axon, without it, the signal may not be communicated correctly. The axon ends in a cluster of terminal butons which are small knobs that secrete chemicals called neurotransmiters. Synapse- juncion where informaion is transmited from one neuron to another. Informaion is received at the dendrites, is passed through the soma and along the axon, and is transmited to the dendrites of other cells at meeing points called synapses.
