Document Summary
Perception process: steps by which we attach meanings to our experiences: selection: selecting which data we will attend to. Stimuli that are intense attract our attention (louder, larger, brighter) Emotional state shapes what we select: organization: arranging the selected information in some meaningful way to make sense out of the world. Perceptual schema: cognitive frameworks that allow us to give order to the information we have selected. We use organizing scheme to make generalizations about members of the groups who fit into our categories. When it loses touch w/ reality, it becomes stereotyping. Categorizing others on the basis of easily recognized, but not necessarily important characteristics. Ascribing a set of characteristics to most or all members of a group. Punctuation: determination of causes and effects in a series of interactions: interpretation: interpreting the selected and organized perceptions in a way that makes some sort of sense, part of every interpersonal act.
