CP102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Application Programming Interface, Network Operating System, Disk Operating System
Document Summary
Data is in concentric circles called tracks; each track consists of pie-shaped sectors; each sector consists of clusters. Read/write head moves from the outer edge of the spinning platter to the center; retrieve (read) and record (write) the magnetic data to and from the hard drive platter. How long this takes seek time. Waiting time for the correct sector to spin to the read/write head latency/rotational delay. When dust is in the hard drive platter, the hard drive stops, and data is lost head crash. Allows you to multitask; perform more than one process at a time. Processor accesses this data from ram when it is ready to process them. Os is responsible for coordinating the space allocations in ram to ensure there"s enough space for the waiting data. Os clears items from ram when processor doesn"t need them. Virtual memory when ram reaches capacity, it borrows room from the hard drive.
