Document Summary

Research is a way of finding out about the world through objective and systematic information gathering. Motivation theory called equity theory is concerned with people"s reactions to fairness or lack of it. Hypothesis: formal statement of the expected relationship between 2 variables. A formal hypothesis stemming from equity theory might be: the less fair people perceive their pay to be, the more likely they will be to resign their jobs. Variables: measures that can take on 2+ values. Variables in the above example are: staying or leaving. Independent variable: variable that predicts or is the cause of variation in the dependent variable. Dependent variable: variable that"s expected to vary as a result of changes to the independent variable. E. g. pay fairness perception is independent and resigning is dependent. Moderating variable: a variable that affects the nature of the relationship between an independent and a dependent variable such that the relationship depends on the level of the moderating variable.
