Anyone can exert influence but managers and execs have formally assigned leadership roles (but some of them don"t lead) Leadership depends on the personal qualities or traits of the leader. Traits personal characteristics like physical, intellectual, and personality. Good leaders: intelligence, energy, self-confidence, dominance, motivation to lead, emotional stability, honesty, need for achievement, sociability. Big five: extraversion and conscientiousness are best predictors of leadership. Hard to determine if traits make the leader or the opportunity for leadership produces the traits. The approach doesn"t take into account the situation in which leadership occurs i. e. top execs and first level supervisors will have different traits to be successful.
