Document Summary

Because the diploid multicellular plant produces spores it is called sporophyte and the generation is called the sporophyte generation. Because the haploid multicellular plant produces gametes it is called gametophyte and the generation is called the gametophyte generation. The combination of the gametophyte generation and the sporophyte generation is called alternation of generations and it describes the basic lifecycle of all plants. A sporangium is a structure in which many thousands of diploid cells undergo meiosis producing huge numbers of haploid spores. Spores are small and can be carried away by the wind or washed away by rain. Many bryophytes only release the air is dry. When the air is wet the spores form clumps that are too big to fit through the openings but when the air is dry they go out. The walls of spores contain sporopollenin a complex mixture of polymers that is remarkably resistant to environmental stresses such as radiation and desiccation.
