Document Summary

Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions that transform energy and matter within a living organism. A metabolic pathway is one strand in the complex network along which a molecule is converted to another through a series of defined steps. The capacity to do work is defined as energy. Objects in motion have kinetic energy, the amount of work required to accelerate an object to a particular velocity. A moving object can transfer some of its kinetic energy to another object by exerting force. An object can have potential energy as a result of it position. This type of energy has the potential to be released and do work. The bonds between the atoms of a molecule also contain potential energy that can be released if the bonds are broken in a chemical reaction. This form of potential energy is known as chemical energy.
