BI110 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Nuclear Membrane, Cell Membrane, Endomembrane System
Document Summary
Eukaryotes, total surface area of intracellular membrane sis tenfold greater than plasma membrane. Many organelles inside cells communicate with one another. Membranes of organelles are either connected by bridges or vesicles. Vesicles: small membrane-closed sacs that transport substances within a cell from interior to exterior of cell. Formed by budding o , taking a piece of membrane and internal contents of the organelle where they derive. Endomembrane system: interconnected membranes including the nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum golgi apparatus, lysosomes, plasma membrane and vesicles. In plants all connected by pores called plasmodesmata. Many types of molecules are unable to cross cell membrane by themselves. The system divides interior of the cell into two distinct worlds( inside vs. outside) Organelles can move by budding o and attaching to a vesicle and moving around the cell. Exocytosis: when a vesicle fuses with the plasma membrane providing a way for a vesicle to empty bringing it to the extracellular space.
