Writing 2101F/G Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: 5G, Apposition, Adpositional Phrase
Document Summary
Fragment a group of words that is not an acceptable sentence, but is punctuated as if it were a sentence. Comma splice when 2 independent clauses are joined w/only a comma, rather than w/a semicolon: usually stems from misunderstanding of sentence structure. Meaning of words is conveyed through their placement in relation to one another: there is conventional formatting, but also a great deal of flexibility. This flexibility can sometimes lead to unintended or ambiguous meaning. Usually keep modifiers and the words they modify as close together as possible. Adverbs such as only, almost, just, etc require particular attention: must be careful to place them where they clearly mean what we want them to. Squinting modifier word or phrase put between 2 elements either of which it could modify. Causes ambiguity that must be clarified through substituting words or structures for the missing vocal emphasis.
