Scientific research is social activity w/o communication cannot participate or contribute to shared body of knowledge. Advancement of science depends on writing research reports, books, articles researchers communicate with others learn, replicate, and extend work. Audience and forms of research vary: professional researcher audience: peers in his field article or scholarly general, student researcher audience: class presentation or seminar, professor and term paper. Task: communicate precisely and accurately what questions framed the research, what literature informed, what the researcher did, what was found and what conclusions may be drawn. All research grounded in existing literature reports should document relationship of present work to literature. Initiate literature search general idea of what you want to study don"t need to narrow down topic right away: sex roles, white collar crime, social capital. Information search will offer opportunities to narrow the topic. Keyword searches yield large lists of citations many irrelevant.
