Sociology 2275A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Psychological Resistance, Listerine, Body Odor
Document Summary
Chapter 5; listerine, lambert and selling the need. Constructive discontents (shame): we are persuaded not so much to buy a product as to remove some dissonance and re-establish a perceived equilibrium. Just so happens the product stands in the path of recovery from the contrived affliction. Purpose is to alter natural body processes (i. e. deodorant for body odor) First used for sterilizing gauze, cleaning floors, scalp treatments. In 1895 it was marketed to the dental profession. In 1914 it became on the the first prescription products to be sold over the counter: no such thing as bad breath at this point though. Taken over by gerald lambert: saved taxes on the product by adding the alcohol. Many ads focused on young women unable to wed. Chapter 5; listerine, lambert and selling the need because of their bad breath: once a bridesmaid but never a bride , whisper copy: a mimic of true story advice to the lovelorn.
