Document Summary

Thorsten sellin was one of the rst criminologists to propose a con ict perspective he presented a criminological theory that focused on the role of conduct norms in explaining crime. He said that conduct norms of social group will tend to re ect societal consensus however in complex societies, consensus is less likely. Conduct norms: speci c rules or norms of appropriate behaviour generally agreed upon by members of the social group to whom the behavioural norms apply. Cultural con ict: theory that attempts to explain certain types of criminal behaviour as resulting from a con ict between the conduct norms of divergent cultural groups. More complex the society, more cultural con ict. Sellin was interested in how the immigrant cultures could come into con ict. He uses criminal norms to describe the conduct norms that are encoded in criminal law. They were killed because he felt they were betraying islam and everything that was dear to him.
