Sociology 2246A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Social Capital, Homeostasis, Psychoneuroimmunology
Document Summary
Chapter 6 - social psychological explanations for illness. What determines a persons actions when they feel ill? (medication, therapy, sleep, eating chicken soup, seeing a doctor, etc. ) Physical illness: can sometimes lead to anxiety, depression, additional stress, and other mental disorders. Some social psychological factors involved with illness and wellbeing include stress, social support, social capital, religion, and prayer. Stressful situations can be healthy; they allow us to adapt to situations and improve. Some stress can be too intense, and can lead to serious illness or even death: too much stress over a short period of time can cause the body to not be able to handle it. Eventually the resistance runs out: exhaustion - cannot fight off the stress anymore, or if the stress has been fought off, the body takes this time to recover. If the body can"t return to homeostasis, it will go to allostasis, which is when they body can be subject to disease.
