Chapter nine: patterns of violence in the family. You are more likely to be killed in your own home by a loved one than anyplace else or by anyone else in society. Many professionals focus only on physical abuse or sexual assaults involving forced penetration. Other forms are seens as muddying the water so much that it might be impossible to determine what causes abuse . Others oppose broad definitions and see them as ideologically driven. Intimate violence may be multidimensional and should be researched accordingly. Many canadians assert that we should use only legal definitions of psychical and sexual assault. Proponents view domestic violence as relatively rare and government resources should not be used for such things. General social survey by statistics canada was informed by criminal code which is why only 7% of the women reported being abused.
