Document Summary
It is about numerical data, a deductive relationship between theory and research. >select research sites-->administrate research instruments and collect data-- Concepts are ideas or mental representations of things. Building blocks of theory and represent the points in which social research is conducted: ex. emotional satisfaction, religious orthodoxy, religious orientation, hyperactivity, academic achievement, crime. Can be either an independent or dependent variable. Measurement allows for delineation of fine differences between people in terms of the characteristic in question. Small differences are hard to see between two variables. Measurement provides the basis for estimates of the nature and strength of the relationship between concepts. Concepts are given two types of definition: nominal: describes in words what the concept means, operational: spells out the researcher will perform to measure the concept. To measure a concept you must have an indicator or indicators representing concepts. For example the total income reported is an indicator of a person"s wealth.
