How people conceptualize and operationalize variables can significantly affect social issues beyond concerns of research methodology: ex. Social measures provide information about social reality: age, sex, skin colour (easy to see, attitudes, ideology, divorce rates, deviance, sex roles (cannot be directly observable) Measurement helps people observe what is otherwise invisible things unknown or unseen but were predicted by theory. Social researcher devises measures for difficult-to-observe aspects of the social world. Pineo-porter: occupation prestige scale: data are gathered on what individuals think about social standings of certain occupations.
