Comparing methods of data analysis: similarities and differences between qualitative and quantitative data analysis, similarities, both use data reduction techniques in order to make statements about social life. This process of going from a lot of data to more generalizable statements of findings is called data reduction: both make inferences from empirical observations to social life. Making inferences requires the use of reasoning to reach a conclusion based on evidence. Researchers systematically record or gather data and in so doing make accessible to others what they did. All researchers reveal their study in some way: researchers strive to avoid errors. Researchers are also alert for possible fallacies or illusions: differences: Quantitative researchers begin their research with a certain set of assumptions. Data are in the form of numbers. Analyses are undertaken by specialized and standardized statistical techniques. Also, quantitative researcher"s choose from a specialized, standardized set of data analysis techniques. Begin data analysis only after all data are collected.
