Single most dramatic change in sports over the past 2 generations: participation of girls and women. Increased media coverage of women in sport: * 2002 women"s hockey at salt lake city olympics, special training given to cbc camera staff for equal coverage. Reasons to be cautious when predicating future participation increases: budget cuts and the privatization of sports programs, due to them being less established, less community support and less revenue generating potential. Images of strong athletes compete with thin models (cosmetic: firm but shapely, fit but sexy, strong but thin b, beach volleyball -- required to wear revealing outfits, goal of sport: achieve an unrealistic body image. Male dominated - their characteristics are used as standards for judging qualifications. Male identified - their characteristics used to determine what is right/normal. Male centered - men are the focus of attention. - women only qualified if they do their jobs like a man .
