Document Summary

Soc 2172 notes on reading advertising choices for week 9. Advertisers make a lot of choices from who to target, through what form, which magazine, how long etc. 1) investigates the role of stereotypes in ads and in society. 2) examines how certain advertisers pushed the enveloppe and chose messages and imagery that are perceived by some as inappropriate and in poor taste. * the term stereotype originated as a printing term. It was originally a metal printing plate that was cast from a cold of a raised printing surface. When a characterization is used in a positive context we may not always see it as a stereotype. For instance, the phrase children love to play with toys can be a stereotype but not seen negative so people don"t consider it a stereotype. But, the phrase women love to shop can have negative connotations and is more likely to be seen as a stereotype.
