What is the role of praxis: george herbert mead (1863, and herbert blumer (1900-1987), robert prus, depicts society as consisting of individuals engaged in various forms of communication that come to have particular meanings. Interpretive: clear lenses, micro, communication: direct and indirect, significant v. generalized others, how identity is developed. Expressions, gestures, finishing each others sentences, changing use of words. When someone gives you their seat on the bus you look at them a different way. What happens when society changes too rapidly: emile durkheim (1858-1917) Tin can pyramid: talcott parsons (influenced by durkeim and weber) Organs/bodily systems: parts of society are structured to maintain its stability, structures can be institutions. Economy, politics, education system , church: viewed society as a vast network of interconnected parts, each of which helps to maintain the system as a whole. Education: positivist approach, early development of sociology, how social order is maintained, macro level, structures performing functions.
