Sociology 1020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Counterurbanization, Thomas Robert Malthus, Arithmetic Progression
Document Summary
Globalized economy has created increase in polarization between rich and poor. Three elements of preindustrial cities: food surplus in fertile valleys, achievement of literacy, technological innovations > metallurgy, agricultural irrigation, wind and water power for sailing and grain milling. Natural urge to reproduce exists under normal conditions. Population growth limited to two checks: positive checks - mortality (famine, plagues, epidemics, wars, preventative checks - fertility (birth control outlawed so moral constraint necessary) Relationship between population growth and resource depletion: Population growth would increase exponentially (2, 4, 8, 16 ) while food supply would only increase arithmetically (2, 4, 6, 8 ) Only resulting poverty would discourage people from marrying early. Advancement in transportation and agricultural technology contributed to growth. Also a shift in sources of capital accumulation - creation of joint stock company. Urban growth has been linked to the invention of the factory. Zone 1: central business district, most valuable land.
