Objective de nition: ethnicity exists because of people"s social attachments. Subjective de nition: process of ethnic identi cation, transactional process , self de ned and re ects a we-feeling of groupness. Formerly divided into caucasoid, mongoloid, and negroid races. Certain kind of idea and a certain kind of institutional practice. The belief that humans are subdivided tmp distinct hereditary groups that are innately different in their social behaviour and mental capacities and that can therefore be ranked as superior and inferior. New racism is focused more on cultural differences rather than biological ones. Problems occur when different groups try to live together. Focus on how prejudice and racism satisfy how the psychological needs of some people. Prejudice and racism as forms of hostility that arise from frustration in achieving a desired goal. Since real source of frustration is too powerful to directly confront, people take it out on the less powerful > scapegoating.
