Sociology 1020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Kibbutz, Matriarchy, Type A And Type B Personality Theory
Document Summary
Gender refers to the personal traits and social positions that members of a society attach to being male or female. Gender stratification is the unequal distribution of wealth, power, and privilege between men and women; this affects the opportunities and constraints people face throughout life. Differences in physical ability between males and females do exist, however women have a longer life expectancy. In adolescence, strength in different areas of mental ability can be measured, but an overall difference in intelligence is not present. Biologically, men and women differ in a limited number of ways and neither is superior. In israel, settlements are called kibbutzim wherein men and women share jobs, take care of children, do household chores, and make decisions about the community. Gender differences are defined by culture; what one society defines as masculine may be viewed as feminine in another.
