Sociology 1020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 23: Rosenhan Experiment, American Psychologist, Type I And Type Ii Errors
Document Summary
Rosenhan was an american psychologist, who originated the rosenhan experiment in 1972. He used 8 pseudopatients, which is a researcher who poses as a patient. Among these pseudopatients their was five men, and three women, including rosenhan himself. All except one patient was admitted with the diagnoses of schizophrenia, beyond claiming the symptoms and falsifying name, vocation, and employment, no further alternations of person, history, or circumstances were made. Within the hospital the pseudopatients were instructed to behave normally, engaged in normal conversation, follow all given instruction, and mention that they were not experiencing any of the symptoms. With this, these patients would write down their observations at the ward, and all their experiences. Their aim was to convince the staff that they were healthy enough to be discharged from the hospitals. With the results 1 patient was diagnosed with schizophrenia and 7 were diagnosed with schizophrenia in remission.
