6 main problems: ignore the historical and cultural variability of gender and sexuality, rape is incomprehensible and varies across cultures. Most are patriarchal and they reinforce inequalities between men and women. Secondary socialization: transforming girls and boys into what is seen as culturally gender appropriate, assumption in schools, that boys do better in sciences and girls in languages and this is reinforced at home. Interaction with peers: subcultures of male and female groups re reinforced and ingrained into their minds, boys have less intimate friend group than boys - based on sports, teams, girls focus on popularity, sociability and attractiveness. The mass media: symbolic representation of gender, children learn from young age in tv, then magazines advertisements, music etc. Body image and eating disorders: gender construction involves attractiveness, especially important for women, judged by appearance, emphasis on being thin is huge, women go to plastic surgery, dieting, fitness to be attractive, must have large breasts.
