Religiosity are the factors that determine how important religion is to people. Durkheim maintains that when people come together, they come to share common sentiments and (cid:448)alues. People also (cid:272)o(cid:373)e to (cid:448)ie(cid:449) certain objects as symbolizing the sacred (the religious, transcendent world), which are called totems. Then, people will perform certain public practices to connect themselves with the sacred. Sports as religious rituals: hockey could be considered a religion. The stanley cup and team symbol are the totems. This can basically apply to any sport (including the football game he linked). One of the biggest criticisms against religion is that while it may claim its purpose is social cohesion, it actually causes social conflict. A church is a bureaucratic religious organization that has accommodate itself to mainstream society and culture. Hinduism, and the numerous mentions of women being subordinate to men in the bible.
