Where people work and what they do depends on their gender, race and/or ethnicity, and other factors. Occupational segregation occurs when people from different social categories do different types of work. Sex segregation occurs when men and women work in different occupation, jobs, and/or workplaces. Racial segregation occurs when people from different racial or ethnic backgrounds work in different jobs, occupations, and/or workplaces. Sex segregation is more extensive than racial segregation. Brooks and colleagues: horizontal segregation different groups work in different jobs often in different sectors of the economy.
