This definition excludes much activity that we consider to be work (house chores, homework, etc. ) Economists define work as activity that produces a good or service for the market. Tilly and tilly define work as human effort that adds use value to goods and services". Use value means that what is produced provides some value aka cleaning your house provides you with less clutter, may be easier to focus. The value does not necessarily have to be economic value, could be personal or social value for us. The definition applies to both work done legally and illegally, as drug dealers are still providing something of use to others. Sociology is the study of human society; societal institutions, social groups and processes of social change. Sociologists are interested in how work relates to other social institutions, how groups react to and cope with work, Institutions, processes, interactions, and outcomes of work are what interest sociologists the most.
