The concept of the display is often closely linked with that of the graphical user interface (gui) which usually describes graphics and includes controls and responses used to manipulate the display. Display acts as a medium between some aspects of the actual information in a system a(cid:374)d the ope(cid:396)ato(cid:396)"s pe(cid:396)(cid:272)eptio(cid:374) a(cid:374)d awa(cid:396)e(cid:374)ess of what the syste(cid:373) is doi(cid:374)g, what (cid:374)eeds to be done and how the system functions. Is it navigating, controlling, decision making, learning etc: once the task and its goals are identified, we must do a detailed information analysis to identify what the operator needs to know to carry out the task. These principles are grounded in the strengths and weaknesses of human perception, cognition and performance. Perceptual principles: make displays legible (or audible) Integrates nearly all of the information relating to issues of contrast, visual angle, illumination, noise, masking, and so forth: avoid absolute judgement limits, top down processing.
