Document Summary
Motives are internal states that arouse and direct behaviour toward specific objects or goals often caused by a deficit, a lack of something, e. g. motivated by hunger after not eating for a few hours. Motives differ in type and amount/ intensity e. g. hunger vs thirst, hunger after skipped meal vs a few days. Motives are often based on needs = states of tension within a person when need is satisfied tension is reduced. Internal psychological needs and urges propel people to think, perceive and act in certain predictable ways. Need= a potentiality or readiness to respond in a certain way under certain given circumstances. Needs organize perception, guiding us to see what we want or need to see. A need also organizes action by compelling a person to do what is necessary to fulfill the need. Summary of murray"s needs into six (6) categories.
