Mapping cultural differences with the big five. Ruth benedict - first researcher to examine the relationship between culture and personality. She described two personality types of the southwest pueblos of mexico: the apollonian and the dionysian. Differences among cultural groups in their overall trait levels on rating scales. For many classes of behaviour, within-culture variability is greater than between-culture variability. The most difficult problem is how to account for mounting evidence that cultural group members sometimes behave according to their culture"s dominant personality - and sometimes do not. Individualism involves a sense of the self as autonomous, devoted to the pursuit of personal goals, and relatively independent and self focused. Collectivism is defined by closer connections to groups and family. Sensitive to goals of the family and groups with which they are connected. Even as adults, they remain interdependent in social relationships, values, and goal pursuits.
