Reading notes chap 12: performance of instrumental response prevents/blocks presentations of aversive event (prevent bad thing from happening, first studied by bechterev with people putting fingers on electrodes and shock happening. Non-discriminated free operant avoidance: avoidance must only occur during warning period, like oil change, do it before things start to go bad, set schedule for delivery of aversive stim, there is an instrumental contingency (not pavlovian) Two factor theory: conditioned fear, avoidance response through fear reduction, beh reinforced by fear reduction (negative reinforcement, avoidance beh due to continuous interaction btw pavolvian and instrumental processes. Conditioned temporal cues: p can learn to distinguish early and late temporal cues. Safety signals and avoidance learning: internal cues (proprioceptive/feedback cues: movements of muscles involved in response, avoidance response followed by predictable period of safety (avoid positively reinforcement by safety signals)
