Psychology 2115A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Loose Connective Tissue, Categorical Perception, Speech Perception
Document Summary
When you monitor and record speech there are no obvious gabs in sound. Production is not as hard as the perception of a normal speaker. Speech perception is pretty fast, not as fast as reading though. It unfolds with time so you can"t go back. Producing speech is a result of air coming up through your trachea and bumping into your vocal chords. Air comes out in puffs which cause your vocal cords to open up and vibrate. Depending on how you are talking you are going to get different sounds from different frequencies. Women have smaller vocal chords which is why women have smaller frequencies. You control frequencies by pressure, tension, and rate. The vocal tract splits into 2: oral and nasal tract. What happens at the mouth level you run into articulators. Your tongue, teeth, lips, alveolar ridge, hard pallet, soft pallet, and your uvula.
